Abstract

[5]Trovacenol (4) prepared according to the sequence (C7H7)V(C5H5) (1)→ (C7H7)V(C5H4OSiMe3) (5) → (C7H7)V(C5H4OH) (4) in the crystal adopts a sheet structure. The sheets consist of parallel chains of hydrogen bonds, graph set C(4), to which the [5]trovacenyl groups are connected, forming double layers. Packing of the trovacene units on both sides of the (···O−H···O−H···)n spines displays a herringbone pattern. In this way O−H···O as well as (C7H7)H···π(C5H5) hydrogen bonding is optimized. This study represents the first full structural characterization of a metallocenol.
